Applicants are evaluated based on the following nine criteria:

- Academic involvement
- Other awards and recognitions
Once selected, honorees are placed into one of six distinct categories: Hall of Fame, Top Guns, Best General Counsel, Ethics & Compliance, Government Stars and Specialists — Private Practice.
